History and Significance

Originally known as Foote Street Square, the area was renamed Lemnos Square in recognition of the historical and enduring link between Port Phillip, Lemnos, and Gallipoli. It is named after the Greek island of Lemnos, which played a crucial role during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

In August 2015, the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial was unveiled at the square, becoming Australia’s first commemorative memorial dedicated to honouring the role of the Greek Island of Lemnos in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The Memorial features two bronze statues of an Australian nurse and a sick or injured Australian soldier, on a stone plinth that has etched the words Lemnos Gallipoli and the names of each village and town on Lemnos visited by the Anzacs and other Allied troops in 1915. The Memorial was designed by Peter Corlett OAM, one of Australia’s most respected commemorative sculptors.

Memorial Features

Apart from the memorial, Lemnos Square also has an Information Board that explains the connection between Lemnos and Port Phillip through Anzac, two flag poles that are used during the annual commemorative service held here each August, and an olive tree.

Community Efforts

The Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial was created by the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, with funding sources from all levels of government, community organizations, individuals, and fundraising efforts by the Committee.
