The Cherry Tree Hotel in Cremorne, Australia, was built in 1860 on the site of an orchard that grew cherries and cherry tomatoes. The orchardist, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, developed a recipe for tomato sauce when he faced a glut of fresh cherry tomatoes. The Rosella factory was later built on the same land where a flock of rosellas had taken up residence and devoured all the cherries. Over the years, the pub went through a sensational decline into criminality and became a drinking hole for ne’er-do-wells.
The Cherry Tree Hotel has a long history filled with colorful events. Joseph Theodore Leslie ‘Squizzy’ Taylor began his criminal career by jumping the bar and absconding with the princely sum of ten shillings from this pub. In the eighties, the pub came to be frequented by Dennis ‘Mr Death’ Allen, who established a network of brothels in Cremorne that provided his bread money. Allen’s favorite dog, “My Doodah,” became a legendary hound that even won first prize in ‘The Winfield Blue Cup.’ Live bating was also born when Allen towed a live chicken smothered in ham, napoli, and melted cheese at top speed behind a vintage car around a rectangular racetrack.
