The Hochgurtel Fountain is a historic fountain in the Carlton Gardens of Melbourne, located on the south side of the Royal Exhibition Building, outside the Great Hall. Designed by sculptor John Hochgurtel, the fountain was commissioned in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880–81.

A Magnificent Victorian-Era Architecture

Standing at ten metres tall, the Hochgurtel Fountain is a true masterpiece of Victorian-era architecture. The base of the fountain is a large circular pool and on a rockey island rising up from the water in the centre of the pool are four fish-tailed merpeople, both male and female, naked children, and goannas, platypus and ferns.

The four merpeople hold up a large dish with naked youthful figures dancing about a central column at the centre of the dish, symbolising a young and vibrant colony that Victoria was at the time. Above them is a smaller dish featuring symbols of the arts, industry, commerce, and science. The next level has a smaller disk adorned with images of Victoria’s indigenous flora and fauna, with a naked boy in the centre holding a clamshell above his head.
