Last week, a friend of mine found herself in a challenging situation with a client who owed significant outstanding invoices. Despite her team exhausting all options, she decided to visit the client’s office. She was waiting for a long time and her patience was tested. For some unknown reason, a laptop caught her attention, and she impulsively decided to grab it and dash out from the office.
At this moment, she felt nervous, scared, with her mind screaming, “He is going to kidnap your children, going to hurt them.” Not surprisingly, the client suddenly appeared and ran towards her. She kept her distance and demanded full payment before returning the laptop.
With emotions ran high, with feeling nervous, fearful, and stress overwhelming her. She reached out to a friend seeking for comfort and security, and he said “Congrats on holding your boundary even though you are scared to death.”
He then asked her 2 questions.
“Are you willing to do whatever it takes to get back what is rightfully yours?” “Do you think you deserve an apology?”
The next morning, she called the client, demanding payment and an apology, despite feeling uncomfortable and wanting the situation to end immediately, yet she made that call. Later that afternoon at 2:30 PM, the client called her back, sounding calm and peaceful, to inform her that the payment was made in full and to offer an apology. Nervously, she accepted. That evening, the laptop was returned.
I shared this story because the action taken was unconventional. Sometimes, being childish, playful, or outrageous, is deemed wrong. However, reclaiming these aspects can make us feel whole again and change the dynamic of the situation. In this case, the gift of boundaries were exchanged.
This resonates deeply with me because I faced a similar situation with a client who owed us 4 months of invoices. Stepping out of the norm (story for another time) get us get paid in full.
Last week, our leadership team spent a day in quarterly meetings and ended the day by experiencing iFly. The wind chamber was securely sealed with two doors controlled by an attendant. Without strong boundaries, the air pressure leaks out, causing those inside to lose control = safety hazard.
In life, boundaries manifest in various areas, whether physical, emotional, relationships. Without strong boundaries, our energy (ie: time, attention, emotions etc) often leaks to areas we need to heal.
PS : Cleaners are typically have low boundaries due to their life circumstances, and easily get taken advantage off.
Its about time to have strong boundaries, and respect others too
